Book Club with Pearl's Books

Join us & our friends from Pearl’s for a Madvillain themed book club on March 31st, featuring Madvillainy by Will Hagle.

”Written from the alternating perspectives of three fake music journalist superheroes-featuring interviews with Wildchild, M.E.D., Walasia, Daedelus, Stones Throw execs, and many other real individuals involved with the album's creation-this book blends fiction and non-fiction to celebrate Madvillainy not just as an album, but as a folkloric artifact. It is one specific retelling of a story which, like Madvillain's music, continues to spawn infinite legends.” (from Bloomsbury)

For last month’s book club, we read Master of Reality by John Darnielle. At 101 pages, this book was emotionally jam-packed, told through the fictional lens of a young adult locked in an adolescent psychiatric center. Through the narrator’s obsession with Black Sabbath, we explored the impact of belonging and feeling seen. We talked about nostalgic marijuana-related music (and MJ inspired music moments 👀), Black Sabbath as a vessel to deliver topics of Christianity, and the importance of autonomy and respect in mental health care.
